Standard rental insurance and optional
insurances
All vehicles are insured
with a full comprehensive policy underwritten by Middle Sea Insurance
(Malta) plc. This covers the
damage to the rented vehicle and third parties (conditions and exclusions apply – see below). A copy of the insurance policy terms
and conditions is available on special request most important of which
are detailed below:
Age Requirements
Our standard policy covers drivers aged between 25
and 70 years. A full license held
for at least 2 years must be presented at time of rental. Young drivers aged 21-24 years and
mature drivers aged 71-75 years may be insured at a daily premium charge.
The F.D.W. option (listed below) is not available for
young or mature drivers so a minimum excess charge always applies.
Deductible / Excess Amounts
The renter’s financial responsibility is limited to
the excess (deductible) amount of EUR500 on mini, economy and compact
cars (groups A-K) or EUR700 on all other car groups (vans, executive and
convertible cars).
The excess charge is payable to file an insurance
claim in all circumstances of damage, whether resulting from accident,
theft, attempted theft, fire, hit and run situations, vandalism or
other. In cases where damages are
minimal and repair costs amount to less than the excess amount, the renter’s
liability will be limited to the actual damage repair cost including any
administration expenses, loss of use of the vehicle and other costs
determined by the company at the time.
The excess charge will not be payable if a Third
Party accepts liability (in writing) for any damage or accident.
The vehicle’s
insurance policy is subject to strict terms and conditions, most
important of which are outlined below.
Super Collision Damage Waiver (S.C.D.W) Insurance
The renter may optionally purchase Super Collision
and Theft insurance (S.C.D.W) to waive 75% of the standard excess
liability in case of any damage / accident / theft / vandalism etc...
(eg: EUR500 will become EUR125).
The discounted cost of this optional insurance is
listed on our booking page. A higher rate may apply if purchased at time
of rental.
Full Damage Waiver (F.D.W) Insurance
The renter may optionally purchase Full Damage Waiver
insurance (F.D.W) to waive 100% of the standard excess liability in case
of any damage / accident / theft / vandalism etc... (eg: EUR500 will
become EUR0).
The discounted cost of this optional insurance is
listed on our booking page. A higher rate may apply if purchased at time
of rental.
The vehicle’s
insurance policy is subject to strict terms and conditions, most
important of which are outlined below (see exclusions for FDW)
Personal Accident Insurance (P.A.I)
This insurance is optionally available at a daily
charge to cover the driver and passengers’ medical expenses in case of
bodily injury including death, loss of sight, loss of limbs, permanent and/or
temporary or partial disablement. The policy will pay according to the
type of injury and on the basis of the benefit levels indicated in your
policy.
The discounted cost of this optional insurance is
listed on our booking page. A higher rate may apply if purchased at time
of rental.
Additional Driver Insurance
This insurance is optionally available at a daily
charge to cover more than one driver on the rented vehicle during the
rental duration. All additional drivers must present their driving
license at time of rental to be insured.
The discounted cost of this optional insurance is
listed on our booking page. A higher rate may apply if purchased at time
of rental.
Wheels, Glass and Tyres Insurance (W.G.T)
This insurance is optionally available at a daily
charge to cover the vehicle’s wheels, tyres, rims and glass components
(windows, side mirrors, windshield etc...). This insurance costs between
€3.50 - €5.90 / day depending on type of vehicle.
The discounted cost of this optional insurance is
listed on our booking page. A higher rate may apply if purchased at time
of rental.
Accidents or Damages
Renters must contact Active car rental at the first
possible instance following any road accident or damage to the vehicle no
matter how minor or the way the damage occurred. Our staff will assist and instruct the
necessary procedure for legal and insurance requirements. The renter
will be required to file a police or traffic warden report and then visit
our nearest location to compile an insurance claim and other required
formalities. Payment of the
applicable excess charge, claim administration fee (detailed below) or
repair costs (depending on the circumstances) will be required right
away.
Dependent on the circumstances Active car rental
reserve the right not to replace the vehicle.
Failure to
complete the necessary formalities (report, insurance claim etc...) at
the first possible instance may automatically void insurance cover making
the renter liable for all repair costs of the rented car and third
parties, including loss of use of the vehicle whilst it is being
repaired.
Insurance claim
administration fee
In the event of an accident whereby an insurance
claim is required to cover the necessary repairs, a claim administration
fee of €59.00 euro is payable by the renter to cover the company’s
administrative costs associated with filing such claim and related
formalities. This fee is payable in all circumstances requiring a claim
irrespective of any insurance waiver option purchased.
Exceptions to the Full Damage
Waiver Insurance (F.D.W)
The full damage waiver
insurance exempts the renter from paying an excess charge required to
open an insurance claim. However any damage to the following is not
covered by the vehicle’s insurance and is payable by the renter: Antenna, trays, car key, damage to car
lock , personal belongings, GPS Navigation systems, loss or damage to
keys , windshield wipers, glass, mirrors, wheels, tires, spare key and
car jack, hubcap, lights, gas cap, warning triangles, damage to the
upholstery of the car, extreme dirtiness in the car, underside damage,
damage due to negligence, tire punctures and burst tires, fuel errors,
damage to child seats and baby seats, lack of electricity because of
forgotten turn on electrical devices.
The car rental company, in any
case, is not obligated in replacing a flat tyre or damages in radio. Damage
caused by drunk driving or negligent driving and consequent expenses will
be at the renter’s expense. Car radios/CD players/stereos are not
insured against damage or theft. Any unnoticed and unreported accident
or damage to the vehicle may be interpreted as negligence and will be
charged to the renter.
The insurance company may at
its own discretion decline coverage should there be suspicion of the car
being driven under the influence of drugs or alcohol, proven reckless
driving, if the car was driven by any person other than the insured and
for any other reason listed on the back of the rental agreement signed on
collection of the vehicle.
Vehicle damages
Vehicles will be checked
for existing damages by our staff prior to commencement of rental. Any damages will be noted and marked in
a vehicle damage report which the renter must sign when collecting the
vehicle. Renters are urged to
check the vehicle properly at the start and the end of their rental and
to notify our staff of any damage not found on the damage report.
At the end of the rental
clients have the option to return the vehicle at the company’s nearest
garage location, where a full inspection will be carried out in the
renter’s presence to ascertain any possible new damages. Vehicle inspections are only carried
out at the company’s garage locations during office hours and after the
vehicles are washed off any dirt and dust.
Should the renter select to
drop off the vehicle at any other time or location, he is automatically
authorising the rental company to carry out the inspection in his absence
and to charge his credit card with the repair cost and related expenses
for any damage which may have occurred during the rental.
Any insurance or excess
waiver option purchased will automatically be voided if damages are not
reported as outlined above.
Personal belongings
Any vehicles left in the
car during or at the end of a rental are the renter’s responsibility.
Active car rental or any of its contractors will not be held liable for
any damage, loss or theft of any belongings left in the rented vehicle.
The excess amounts for
which renters are responsible are determined by the rental company and
not by the insurance company.
General conditions of hire, optional services
& rental extras
Vehicle delivery & collection
Active Car Rental offers a vehicle delivery and
collection service to any location or address in Malta & Gozo. The
charge for this service is clearly indicated on the booking process and
your confirmation voucher.
Active car rental will always
try to deliver cars punctually, however due to traffic and other
operational reasons sometimes beyond our control, delays may occur. Renters are kindly asked to allow a 20 minute
margin either way from the time booked. Longer delays may mean other
problems with the booking and in such cases clients should telephone on
(356) 21239421. Clients in Gozo
are kindly asked to allow a one hour margin since the ferry may have
impact on delivery timings.
After Hour rentals
All rentals commencing between 7pm and 7am (any
location in Malta & Gozo), or on Public Holidays are subject to a one
time
“Out of hours” charge. This charge is clearly indicated on our
booking process and your confirmation voucher.
Baby Seat Rentals
Child seats, newborn baby seats and child booster
seats are available for hire at a daily charge. These must be ordered in
advance when making your reservation. The discounted cost to rent baby
seats is listed on the booking page.
A higher rate may apply if not pre-booked and purchased at time of
rental.
Clients are advised that our staff do not fit baby
seats in the car. Baby seats must be fitted by the renter.
24hr Road assistance & breakdown service
This service is provided by
our contracted road assistance company and is offered free of charge with
all our rentals. In case of any
breakdown, damage, flat tyre, mechanical fault, vehicle malfunction or
any other reason requiring assistance, our contractors are to be
contacted to send the required assistance. The phone number is provided with the
vehicle key tag.
Flat & punctured tyres
The 24hr road assistance contractors will provide
free assistance to replace a flat tyre with the spare wheel; however tyres,
rims and wheels are not covered by the standard rental insurance. Tyres,
wheels and/or rims damaged during rental are at the renters’ expense. Renters are required to have these
replaced or repaired forthwith at the nearest station at the first
possible instance. The cost of any repair or replacement will be refunded by the company only
if the W.G.T. insurance is purchased in advance or if replacement is
required due to normal wear.
Should a second flat tyre occur following a span of
24 hours from the first instance, the required assistance service may be
subject to a charge since an additional wheel may need to be delivered or
the vehicle towed to the nearest repair shop.
Parking tickets / Traffic
violations / Overspeeding Fines
Any parking tickets, traffic
offences, over speeding fines or contraventions will automatically be
charged to the renter’s credit card during or after time of rental either
by the company or directly by the local enforcement services.
An administration fee of 15
euro + 17% tax (€17.70) applies to any contraventions paid by the company
on the renter’s behalf.
CVA charges (traffic
congestion)
A
vehicle traffic congestion charge may apply if the vehicle is driven into
Valletta city centre. This charge normally amounts from 1 to 4 euro
depending on duration of stay in Valletta centre. An administration fee of up to €5.90 is
payable for any CVA charges paid on the renters behalf. All CVA related charges will be
automatically charged to the renter’s credit card, usually one to two
months after termination of rental.
Lost & Stolen car keys
Car keys are not covered by the vehicle’s
insurance. The renter is
responsible for any loss or damage to the car key during rental. In cases where a vehicle is locked
inside the car or lost a charge will apply for delivery of the spare key
and any work involved to replace the lost key. In the event that the car
key is lost, the renter is required to file a police report and will be responsible
for the cost to replace, cut and recode the key(s). A charge for loss of use of the vehicle
may also apply since the vehicle cannot be rented out without a spare
key.
Disclaimer: Car Stereos / CD /
radio cassette players
Vehicle descriptions may
include features such as car radio/stereo/CD player however the cost of
installing, repairing or replacing these features is not built into the
rental charges and therefore Active car rental reserve the right to
supply vehicles without these features. Such cases are rare and normally
caused by circumstances beyond the company’s control since stereo/CD is a
standard feature on the majority of the vehicles.
